Rhizome far-creeping, branching, 1.5-2 mm thick, covered with pale to dark brown scales usually shorter than internodes and which become fibrous and darker with age; shoot arising at intervals, singly or in small tufts. Stems 15-35 (-50) cm, rather slender, sometimes slightly nodding, scabrid above; basal sheaths tightly clasping, usually pale reddish-brown. Leaves 1-2.5 mm broad, ± shorter than Stems , rather stiff, ± erect, canaliculate, greyish-green, with scabrid margins and long trigonous tip, minutely papillose above. Spikes 4-10, all ± similar, ± aggregated in an oblong, lobed Inflorescence to 4.5 cm; spikes usually male below or some entirely female or middle ones entirely male, ovoid-oblong, 1-1.3 cm; bracts glumaceous, lowest often with setaceous tip frequently longer than its spike. Female glumes narrowly ovate, c. as long as or shorter than utricles, acute to long-acuminate, chestnut-coloured. Utricles yellowishbrown to chestnut-coloured, ovoid, 3.5-4.5 mm, distinctly many-veined on both faces, veins ± elevated; surfaces minutely papillose; basal part filled with whitish spongy tissue; upper half of Utricles distinctly but narrowly winged, with scabrid margins; apex rather abruptly tapering into deeply bifid beak, with ± straight points. Nut oblong, flattened, brown.
